More than 120 educators from elementary through post-secondary settings participated in the first day of the 15th Annual Lesson Study Spring Conference on May 11. Photographs from the day’s activities are available here. The Conference takes place at Prieto Math and Science Academy on Chicago’s West Side. The Day 1 Research Lesson featured 5th graders from Peirce International School, and the lesson, on unit conversions, decimals, and proportional reasoning, and principal Lori Zaimi taught the class.
Following the research lesson, teachers from the research team at the school participated in a panel discussion to review the lesson and evaluate the data they accumulated from observing the students during the course of the lesson. Dr. Tad Watanabe, of Kenesaw State University, contributed final comments.
Dr. Roger Howe, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Yale University and Professor of Mathematics at Texas A&M, gave the Conference keynote. The evening was capped by a Kampai! celebration at Cafe Iberico.
