2023 IMPULS Lesson Study Immersion Programs in Japan
June 6-15 and June 20-29
Project IMPULS at Tokyo Gakugei University and Lesson Study Alliance are pleased to announce two Lesson Study Immersion programs taking place in June of 2023.
Each program offers educators a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic mathematics Lesson Study in Japan. Participants will observe several mathematics lessons developed through Lesson Study in elementary and secondary schools and observe how Japanese teachers engage in post-lesson discussion. All research lessons and post-lesson discussions will be simultaneously translated into English by experts in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, participants will have opportunities to interact with teachers, students, and education professors from schools and universities in Japan.
The two programs are:
- Level 1 (June 6-15): designed to introduce Lesson Study basics to educators interested in conducting Lesson Study in their schools. Cost: 3,500 USD.
- Level 2 (June 20-29): designed for educators with first-hand experience of Lesson Study to develop leadership capacity. Cost: 4,000 USD.
The tentative schedule of events may be found here.
Tuition includes the cost of accommodations and local transportation during the program. Participants will be responsible for their own international airfare to Tokyo and local transportation between the airport and the hotel in Tokyo.
We can accept only a limited number of participants due to the constraints of live research lesson observation.
An initial application, along with a non-refundable $50 application fee, is due by January 31, 2023. If your initial application is accepted, we will invite you to submit a formal application to the program, and the application fee will be applied toward the full tuition.
