2024 IMPULS Lesson Study Immersion Programs in Japan

June 18-27 and November 12-21

IMPULS-Japan (International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study) and Lesson Study Alliance are again offering their popular Lesson Study Immersion Programs in Japan in 2024.

These programs offer educators a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic mathematics Lesson Study in Japan. Participants will observe several mathematics lessons developed through Lesson Study in elementary and secondary schools and observe how Japanese teachers conduct their post-lesson discussions. All research lessons and post-lesson discussions will be simultaneously translated into English by experts in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, participants will have opportunities to interact with teachers, students, and education professors from schools and universities in Japan.

IMPULS Immersion programs have been offered annually since 2012 (except 2020 & 2021). Nearly 400 educators from 15 countries have participated. They have described it as a life-changing experience and have used their experience to support colleagues in implementing Lesson Study in their schools and home countries.

The two programs are:

  • PROGRAM FULL Level 1 (June 18-27, 2024): designed to introduce Lesson Study basics to educators interested in conducting Lesson Study in their schools. Cost: $4,000 USD.
  • Level 2 (November 12-21): designed for educators with first-hand experience of Lesson Study to develop leadership capacity. Cost: $4,500 USD.

A sample schedule of events (based on previous years) may be found here.

Tuition includes the cost of accommodations and local transportation during the program. Participants will be responsible for their own international airfare to Tokyo and local transportation between the airport and the hotel in Tokyo.

We can accept only a limited number of participants due to the constraints of live research lesson observation.

An initial application, along with a non-refundable $50 application fee (payable here), is due by July 31, 2024. If your initial application is accepted, we will invite you to submit a formal application to the program, and the application fee will be applied toward the full tuition.
